Claritax Books will be publishing two main titles on capital allowances (in addition to a specialist book on the changing rules for fixtures, and various short texts aimed at owners of particular types of business). Together, these books will offer comprehensive technical and practical coverage of the UK’s capital allowances system. This A-Z is the first of the two. It provides an analysis of more than 200 types of common expenditure, showing whether or not they qualify as plant or machinery. That is around twice the number of such entries in any equivalent book.

Each entry includes all appropriate statutory and case law references, together with HMRC guidance and the authors’ personal commentary, based on their practical experience of advising businesses on capital allowances issues over many years.

An indication is given of whether the assets qualify for allowances at the standard rate or at the lower “special” rate. Assets that may qualify for enhanced allowances are also flagged.

Around June 2012, the complementary volume will appear, entitled Capital Allowances 2012-13, also written by Ray Chidell and Ian Sutton. This will provide detailed technical commentary on capital allowances in general (with a particular emphasis on plant and machinery but also containing full coverage of other allowances that may still be claimed). This second volume will reflect the changes that we already know will be introduced from April 2012, as well as any further developments contained in the 2012 Finance Bill. It will also have full coverage of the new rules for fixtures.
